Conservation is the key to sustainable development. While Development involves the use of Natural Resources, conservation helps in ensuring sustainability of development for the present without foreclosing the options for future generations. Meghalaya is endowed with vast natural resources & bio diversity. However, there has been largely a bypass in the judicious use of natural resources & bio diversity.

The Institute of Natural Resources (INR), Meghalaya is one of the  Institutes established under the State Planning Department, Government of Meghalaya. The Institute’s main objective is to manage and strengthen knowledge for natural resources and sustainable livelihoods.

The Institute of Natural Resources, Meghalaya seeks to address the issues regarding sustainable natural resources use by strengthening and empowering the capacity of the concerned stakeholders particularly, farming communities and other entrepreneurs who are directly depending on the natural resources for meeting their basic and livelihoods needs.

This Institute facilitates the required knowledge services through the Centre for Bio-Resources, Centre for Water Resources, Centre for Land Resources, Center for Climate Change Adaptation and Centre for Weather Monitoring and Advisory.

The Institute’s goal is to pursue enrichment and empowerment of the people/community with time tested conservation technologies, management practices and knowledge for improved productivity and profitability without deteriorating the natural resource base.

  1. Facilitating information and knowledge support on Bio-Resources, Water Resources, Land (Soil) Resources and Climate Change Management for the Concerned Stakeholders and Natural Resources Users.
  2. Entering into partnership with Universities, Research & Development Institutions, Centres of Excellence, Stakeholders, etc for providing resource support (as Knowledge Partners) in the field of Bio-Resource Management for addressing sustainable basic and livelihood needs of the Users.
  3. Taking up studies and action/adaptive research for enhanced productivity of bio-resources, water resources, land (soil) resources within the sustainable development framework.
  4. Building Knowledge repository on Biological, Water, Land (Soil) Resources, natural disaster preparedness and climate change adaptation.
  5. To work with global consultants, Sector associations as well as experts from national and international agencies associated with research and development, training, skill development, course accreditation or other required specializations in the Sector.
  6.  To liaise and collaborate with various associations in the Sector or otherwise by suitable means (memorandum of understanding, collaboration agreements, partnering arrangements and others) for benefit of Society.

To facilitate development and dissemination of time-tested conservation technologies and management practices for improved productivity and profitability without deteriorating the natural resource-base as also disaster preparedness plan.
