A hands-on training programme on the propagation of patchouli was conducted for the SelfHelp Group (SHG) on 7th May 2026 at Ranikor Block, South West Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya. The training aimed to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of the participants in the cultivation and propagation techniques of patchouli, a high-value aromatic crop widely used in the perfumery and essential oil industry.
The South West Khasi Hills district experiences a humid and warm climate characterised by a Subtropical Highland climate influenced by the South-West Monsoon. Due to its comparatively lower altitude and proximity to the Bangladesh border, the region provides favourable agro-climatic conditions for the successful cultivation of patchouli. These environmental conditions support healthy plant growth and higher biomass production, making the area suitable for commercial patchouli cultivation.
During the training, participants were provided with practical demonstrations on nursery management, stem cutting preparation, planting methods, and crop maintenance practices for patchouli propagation. The programme emphasised the economic importance of patchouli as a high-value cash crop with strong demand in the perfume, cosmetic, and essential oil industries.
Farmers and SHG members were encouraged to adopt patchouli cultivation as an alternative source of livelihood and income generation. With proper cultivation practices and market linkage, patchouli farming has the potential to significantly improve the socio-economic condition of rural farmers in the region.
